IP Lawma Mia! is an intellectual-property focused musical revue. The presenters wrote new lyrics to popular songs (primarily ABBA songs, hence the play on Mamma Mia). The lyrics and the introductions presented the fact patterns and legal issues for current significant IP cases. The songs addressed important decisions (and cases soon to be resolved) by the Supreme Court and the Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit, as well as changes in practice and procedure before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. Topics included the protectability of scandalous trademarks, newly released guidance for determining patentable subject matter, the protection of jokes and software interfaces through copyright, and the ongoing Google/Oracle copyright dispute, among others. Each song concerned a different topic that IP attorneys face. The show included a live band, and each song has an informative introduction. The program included case summaries for each case discussed.
