Each October, the American Inns of Court creates a space for the legal community to celebrate Civility Month and engage in a discussion on civility, an organizational cornerstone.
The tradition of civility in the practice of law has been around since Magna Carta. The American Inns of Court were founded on the tradition of the English Inn of Court system, with a vision of a legal profession and judiciary dedicated to professionalism, ethics, civility, and excellence. Every October, we celebrate civility as one of our cornerstone competencies during Civility Month. Throughout the month, we encourage Inn members and attorneys around the country to have conversations which explore the interconnectedness of law and civility, the role civility has played throughout history, and the continuing importance and relevance of civility in the modern legal community. Our National Conversation on Civility is the capstone of Civility Month activities.
The format of the conversation changes from year to year. It is generally held the same morning as our annual awards dinner, the Celebration of Excellence. In the past we have had panel discussions, an armchair discussion with a Supreme Court Justice, and stand alone speakers.
Continuing Legal Education
Participants will be asked to sign a CLE form upon arrival; after the program, signed in attendees will be emailed a certificate of attendance and any other relevant documents for self-reporting. This, along with a copy of the onsite program, is generally enough for attorneys to submit for 1–1.5 CLE hours in most jurisdictions; the American Inns of Court will provide any additional documentation that is requested and assist in whatever way is possible.
Online registration must be completed in advance; there is a fee to attend. The program is open to Inn members, their guests, other members of the legal community and the public. Fees and registration information will be made available prior to the event.
Travel and Hotel Accommodations
Participants are responsible for their own travel and hotel accommodations. If you are also attending the Celebration of Excellence, you will receive information about discounted hotel rooms with your confirmation.
