NCC 2023: Free Speech and Civility
Questions of "free speech" arise every day in both societal and legal contexts. The concept is employed as a tool for advocacy and awareness building, as well as a platform for controversial topics and even hate speech. But is free speech totally free? Does free or "protected" speech give permission to abandon civility? The National Conversation on Civility will begin with a discussion on what the first amendment actually says, and what it means in a modern context. Next, speakers address the topic of how to exercise rights while maintaining civility, and how to handle the tension between “free” and "civil" speech through the lens of what professionalism dictates for the Bench and the Bar.
