2018 National Conversation on Civility Virtual Replay

Overview

The tradition of civility in the practice of law has been around since Magna Carta. The American Inns of Court were founded on the tradition of the English Inn of Court system and believes that civility is a cornerstone of the legal profession. We invite you to be part of an ongoing conversation about its importance.

Start by watching a recording* of the Traditions of Civility panel discussion that offered unique perspectives from esteemed British barristers and judges about the tradition of civility and the positive impact it can have on both one’s career and the greater legal system. The panel explores the interconnectedness of law and civility, the role civility has played throughout history, how the English Inns incorporate civility into their own style of law practice, the influence those traditions have had on the American style, and the continued importance and relevance of civility in the modern legal community, both here and abroad.

Then continue the conversation with a live Q&A session on Wednesday, November 14 with the original moderator and two of the panelists:

  • The Rt Hon Dame Elizabeth Gloster DBE, Treasurer, Inner Temple
  • The Rt Hon Lord Thomas of Cwmgiedd, former Lord Chief Justice of England and Wales, Gray's Inn
  • Kannon Shanmugam, Esquire, partner, Williams & Connolly, LLP (moderator)

You will be prompted to submit questions for the panelists in advance, but will also have the opportunity to ask during the program via a chat feature.

Upon completion of the program, you will also receive a copy of the recorded version of the original Q&A session.

*This program was originally held live on October 20, 2018.
