Each October, the American Inns of Court recognizes Civility Month by hosting and engaging the legal community in a discussion on civility, which is one of our four core ideals.

Overview

The tradition of civility in the practice of law has been around since Magna Carta. The American Inns of Court were founded on the tradition of the English Inn of Court system, with a vision of a legal profession and judiciary dedicated to professionalism, ethics, civility, and excellence. Each October, we recognize civility as one of our core ideals during Civility Month.  Throughout the month, we encourage Inn members and attorneys around the country to have conversations that explore the interconnection of law and civility, the role civility has played throughout history, and the continuing importance and relevance of civility in the modern legal community. Our National Conversation on Civility is the highlight of Civility Month activities.

Program Details

The format of the conversation changes from year to year. It is generally held in late October and is a live virtual event. In the past we have had panel discussions, an armchair discussion with a Supreme Court Justice, and stand alone speakers.

Continuing Legal Education

Our educational offerings are considered “CLE Eligible” which means that, while they may not be "pre-approved" by a particular bar association or jurisdiction, they are designed to meet the requirements of most CLE bodies. We strive to offer high-quality educational programming that should allow for an attorney to self-report and receive credit hours. Learn more.

Registration

Online registration must be completed in advance; there is a fee to participate. The program is open to Inn members, their guests, other members of the legal community and the public. Fees and registration information will be made available prior to the event.
