The Federal Bar Council American Inn of Court
The Federal Bar Council
American Inn of Court endeavors to embody the goals of the Federal
Bar Council and the American Inns of Court by fostering collegial
interaction between the Bench and Bar through intellectually
stimulating programs and informal discussions that promote the
ideals of professionalism, mentoring, ethics and legal
skills.
The Inn's mission includes a
commitment to diversity of its membership in terms of personal and
professional background and experience. Among its many goals, the
Inn endeavors to create a community of lawyers and jurists who care
about the legal profession and each other, in the hope that members
of the Inn will guide, mentor and befriend each other at formal
meetings and in their spare time.
President's Welcome July 2012
I am honored to serve as President of the Federal Bar Council
American Inn of Court for
the Inn year 2012-2013. Founded in 2000, the FBC Inn is a diverse
and collegial group of federal judges and practicing lawyers
who gather regularly to "break bread" and to present
stimulating and instructive programs on a wide array of legal
subjects. The FBC Inn is one of approximately 350 American
Inns of Court currently active throughout the country.
Our members reflect a diversity of practice areas and personal
and professional
backgrounds. The Inn's members are divided into three categories -
Master, Barrister and
Associate - based on years of professional experience. The active
members of the FBC Inn are
divided into eight teams, each led by a judge, with each team
responsible for devising, preparing and presenting a CLE
program to the rest of the Inn. All team members actively
participate in the Inn's programs, which reflect a wide
variety of topics and formats, including reenactments
of historical events and trials, mock arguments and
legislative hearings, vignettes of all sorts, and multimedia
accompaniments.
Our Inn, like its English forebears, is devoted to fostering
professionalism, continuing legal
education, practice skills and mentoring. Our Mission Statement
provides that the FBC's Inn
"endeavors to create a community of lawyers and jurists who care
about the legal profession and each other, in the hope that
members of the Inn will guide, mentor and befriend each other
at formal meetings and in their spare time."
Beyond the Inn's monthly program meetings, each preceded by an
informal cocktail hour,
and our annual celebratory dinner each June, Inn members gather
informally in a variety of
settings. Each program team enjoys team dinners and holds working
meetings to prepare its
program. For this coming year, the Inn instituted a program in
which junior lawyers will be
assigned a mentor to meet with regularly for a meal or other
informal activity, and to be available for advice and
guidance.
If you are interested in becoming a member of the FBC Inn or
have questions about the
Inn, please contact our Membership Chair, Sheila Boston, by e-mail.
